Basic Scones are a classic breakfast food popular in the UK and Ireland. These buttery and flaky scones are traditionally served with clotted cream and jam, but you can use anything from honey, fresh fruits, or cheese for a twist. A good scone is light, fluffy, and crumbly with a slightly sweet taste that melts in your mouth. Unlike other baked goods, scones are not too sweet and are perfect for those who like to balance their sweet tooth with a less sweet breakfast option.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
2.In a large bowl, whisk together self-raising flour, salt, baking powder, and 3 tablespoons of sugar until well combined.
3.Grate cold butter using a cheese grater and mix it into the flour mixture with your fingers until it resembles coarse meal.
4.Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 1 cup of milk. Stir until a soft dough forms.
5.Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently until it comes together.
6.Flatten the dough into a circle and cut it into 8 equal-sized wedges. Brush the wedges with beaten egg mixture and sprinkle the remaining sugar on top.
7.Bake the scones for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with butter and jam or any other topping of your choice.

PROS

These Basic Scones are extremely easy and quick to make with basic ingredients.
Plus they can be customized in any way you want by adding dried fruits, chocolate chips, or any other flavor to the dough.

Perfect for your breakfast or brunch with friends and family.

CONS

Scones are not exactly healthy as they are high in calories, fat, and carbs.
They should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Also, it’s important not to over-knead the dough as it can result in tough and rubbery scones.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

This recipe cannot be called healthy but you can make it healthier by using low-fat milk, a lesser amount of butter, and whole wheat flour. Scones are a good source of energy and provide some essential nutrients like calcium, iron, and fiber which contribute to maintaining overall health.
