Ingredients

2 salt herring fillets ( Schmaltz )
1 cup milk
1 small red onion , cut into thin rings
5 potatoes
4 carrots
3 beets
4 eggs
2 cups mayonnaise
Selyodka Pod Shuboy, also known as Dressed Herring, is a traditional Russian dish that is typically served during the holiday season. Instructions

1.Soak the herring fillets in milk for an hour.
2.Peel and boil the potatoes, carrots and beets separately, and cut into small pieces.
3.Boil the eggs, separate the yolk and the white. Chop the yolk and the white separately.
4.Strain and dry the herring fillets. Remove the bones and dice the fish into small pieces.
5.Assemble the dish by layering the ingredients: first the potatoes, then the herring, followed by a layer of onions, then the beets, the carrots, the egg whites, the mayo and finally the egg yolks.
6.Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
