French Onion Soup is a classic dish with origins that date back to ancient Rome. Over the years, it has been refined and altered by various cultures, but the basic idea remains the same: caramelized onions, beef broth, and melted cheese. This recipe adds a twist with a touch of white wine, giving the soup an elevated taste. This soup can be enjoyed as a starter or main course and is perfect for a cozy night in.

Instructions

1.In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes or until caramelized.
2.Stir in flour and cook for 2-3 minutes. Gradually add beef broth, white wine, water, and bay leaves while continuously stirring.
3.Bring the mixture to a boil then let simmer for 30 minutes while stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaves.
4.Preheat broiler. Place bread slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes until toasted.
5.Fill oven-safe bowls with the soup and place a slice of toasted bread on top of each. Sprinkle swiss cheese on top and broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, around 2-3 minutes.
