Ingredients

olive oil ( for sauteing )
1 medium onion ( chopped )
2 red peppers ( chopped or sliced into strips )
3 1/2 lbs ground beef ( I usually buy the cheap stuff and drain the fat )
1 can whole tomatoes ( I used Pine Cone brand )
1 can tomato paste
24 ounces water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon sugar
1 lb pasta ( I used rotini )
parmesan cheese ( to sprinkle on individual servings ) ( optional )

Instructions

1.Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven on medium heat.
2.Add chopped onion and saute until softened, about 5 minutes.
3.Add red peppers and continue to saute for another 3 minutes.
4.Add ground beef to the pan and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 10 minutes.
5.Drain excess fat if desired.
6.Add whole tomatoes, tomato paste, water, salt, pepper, garlic powder, dried basil, dried oregano, and sugar to the pan, breaking up the whole tomatoes with a spoon.
7.Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
8.Cook pasta according to package instructions and drain.
9.Serve the meat sauce over the pasta, and sprinkle with parmesan cheese if desired.
