Cuban-style flan is a classic dessert from Cuba and Latin America. It is a rich, creamy custard that is flavored with vanilla and topped with a sweet caramel sauce. This recipe is incredibly easy to prepare, with only a few simple ingredients. Unlike traditional flans, which are baked in a water bath and require a lot of time, this version is made with a canned milk mixture and baked without a water bath, which makes it incredibly easy to make. Whether served as an after-dinner dessert or as a make-ahead treat for special occasions, this Cuban-style flan is sure to satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth.

Instructions

.Preheat your oven to 350°F.
.In a small saucepan, heat the sugar and water (if using) over medium-high heat, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture turns a deep amber color, about 8-10 minutes.
.Quickly pour the hot caramel into a 9-inch baking dish, swirling the pan to coat the bottom evenly.
.In a mixing bowl, whisk together the whole egg, egg yolks, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract.
.Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
.Place the dish into a large roasting pan, and fill the roasting pan with hot water until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the baking dish.
.Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
.Remove from the oven and allow the flan to cool to room temperature.
.Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
.When ready to serve, run a knife around the edges of the dish to loosen the flan, then invert the dish onto a platter and carefully lift the baking dish.
