Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2.In a saucepan, bring the water, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and anise seeds to a boil and let simmer for 10 minutes. Then remove from heat and let cool.
3.In another saucepan, cook the sugar and 2 tablespoons of water over medium heat until it caramelizes to a golden brown color.
4.Pour the caramelized sugar into a 9x13 inch baking dish.
5.Cut the day-old bread into small chunks and put them in the baking dish on top of the caramelized sugar.
6.In a blender, blend the cooled spice mixture, evaporated milk, eggs, white sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and melted butter until smooth.
7.Pour the blended mixture over the bread chunks in the baking dish.
8.Use a fork to move the bread chunks around to make sure they are well coated with the liquid mixture.
9.Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 60 minutes.
10.Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
