Ingredients

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine , softened
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour ( or unbleached flour I use Gold Medal )
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Snickerdoodles from Betty Crocker Kitchens are one of America's favorite cookies. These cookies are soft, chewy, and covered in a delicious coating of cinnamon sugar. The name "snickerdoodle" may have come from the German word Schneckennudel which means snail noodle, or in this case, a cinnamon-coated cookie. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 400°F.
2.Mix 1 1/2 cups sugar, butter or margarine, and shortening. Add in eggs and mix well.
3.In a separate bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Add this mixture by spoonfuls to butter mixture and mix well.
4.Mix 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Shape cookie dough into 1-inch balls and roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
5.Place the balls two inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until set but not too hard. Let them cool for a minute before removing from the cookie sheet.
