3/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 dried red chilies

2 small tomatoes , pureed
1 pinch turmeric powder
1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1.In a mortar and pestle, crush the black pepper, cumin seeds, garlic cloves, and dried red chilies until they form a paste.
2.In a saucepan, heat the ghee over medium heat.
3.Add the curry leaves and turmeric powder to the pan, and stir well.
4.Once the curry leaves begin to sizzle, add the tomato puree and salt to the pan.
5.Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes until the tomato puree is cooked through.
6.Add the crushed spices to the pan, and stir to combine.
7.Tear the betel leaves into small pieces, and add them to the pan.
8.Add 2 cups of water to the pan and bring the mixture to a boil.
9.Reduce the heat and allow the rasam to simmer for 10-15 minutes until the flavors have melded together.
10.Serve hot with steamed rice.
