Ingredients

1/2 cup green lentil
1 medium onion , diced
3 garlic cloves , minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons ground coriander
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
1 teaspoon ground red chili pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup water
Masoor Dhal is a popular dish in India, Pakistan and other countries in South Asia. It is usually served as a main dish with rice or bread. Masoor Dhal is made with green lentils and a variety of spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric and chili pepper. It is a comforting and hearty meal that is perfect for a cold day. The lentils are slowly cooked until they are tender and then infused with the fragrant spices to create a warm and flavorful dish. You can add more water to make it a soup or less water to make it thicker and more like a stew.

Instructions

1.Rinse lentils well and soak in cold water for 30 minutes
2.Heat oil in a pot over medium heat and sauté onions and garlic until onions are golden brown
3.Add coriander, cumin, turmeric, chili pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and salt and cook for 1 minute or until fragrant
4.Drain lentils and add to the pot, along with water, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and let simmer for 30 minutes or until tender
5.Serve hot, topped with chopped parsley or cilantro if desired
