Ingredients

1 cup split peas , dried
2 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter
1 large onion , thinly sliced lengthwise
1 teaspoon whole cumin seed
10 whole cloves
5 whole black peppercorns
Dhal is a popular, budget-friendly, and easy-to-make dish from South Asia. It is a staple food in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Dhal, also known as lentil soup, is packed with protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients. The dish comes in different variations, and split pea dhal is one of them. Instructions

1.Rinse split peas and soak for at least 30 minutes.
2.In a pot, add split peas, water, turmeric, cayenne, and salt. Bring it to a boil over medium heat and then reduce to low heat and simmer covered for an hour, or until the split peas are soft.
3.In a pan, heat butter on medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until they're caramelized. Add cumin seed, cloves, and black peppercorns. Mix everything and cook for another 5 minutes.
4.Add the onion mixture to the split peas. Mix everything together and cook for another 10 minutes. Serve hot.
