Ingredients

1 cup red lentil
3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon salt
1 medium onion , finely sliced
3 tablespoons oil ( any cooking oil )
3 garlic cloves , crushed
2 dried whole red chilies ( optional )
1 bay leaf
1 stick cinnamon
1 tablespoon coriander ( optional )

Instructions

1.Rinse the red lentils in cold water until the water runs clear.
2.In a large pot, combine the red lentils, turmeric, coriander, salt, and 4 cups of water.
3.Add the sliced onions and oil to the pot, and stir well.
4.Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the lentils are soft.
5.In a separate pan, heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat.
6.Add the crushed garlic, dried whole red chilies, bay leaf, and cinnamon stick, and sauté for 1-2 minutes or until fragrant.
7.Add the sautéed mixture to the lentils, and stir well.
8.Serve the daal hot, garnished with fresh coriander if desired.
