Ingredients

1 cup toor dal
1 1/4 lbs roma tomatoes , diced
3 green chili peppers , chopped ( called `` Thai chile )
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
2 teaspoons oil
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
1 tablespoon cumin seed
2 dried red chilies , torn up ( sold as oriental chiles )
1/8 teaspoon asafoetida powder
10 -12 curry leaves , torn
Tomato Dahl Dal, also known as Tomato Dal, is a popular Indian dish with a blend of tangy, spicy, and savory flavors. This is a comfort food for many Indians and a staple dish in many households. Instructions

1.Rinse the toor dal until the water is clear, then soak it in cold water for 30 minutes.
2.Drain the water and add the dal into a pressure cooker with 2 1/2 cups of water and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. Pressure cook for 2 whistles on high heat. After that, reduce the heat and cook for another 10 minutes.
3.Wait for the pressure to release naturally and open the pressure cooker lid. Use a whisk or hand blender to mash the dal and keep it aside.
4.Heat oil in a large pot and add mustard and cumin seeds. Once they start spluttering, add green chili peppers, curry leaves, and dried red chilies, and fry for around 30 seconds.
5.Next, add chopped tomatoes, 1/4 tsp turmeric, and asafoetida powder. Cook until tomatoes are mushy and the oil separates from the mixture.
6.Then add the mashed dal to the pot, along with 1/2 cup of hot water. Mix and let it cook for another 10-15 minutes until the dal is heated through.
7.Serve hot with rice or roti.
