Ingredients

1 lb phyllo pastry sheet
3/4 lb butter , melted
3 cups milk
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup fine grain semolina
2 2/3 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Lebanese Baklava is a popular dessert that originated in the Levant region. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2.In a pot, combine the milk, 1/3 cup sugar, vanilla, and salt, then heat until it boils.
3.Gradually stir in the semolina and cook the mixture for 5 minutes over low heat.
4.In a separate pot, mix the 2 2/3 cups of sugar, water, and lemon juice, then heat until it boils.
5.Reduce to a simmer and continue cooking over low heat for another 10 minutes.
6.Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter.
7.Layer 10 sheets of phyllo in the pan, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
8.Pour the semolina mixture over the phyllo and smooth it into an even layer.
9.Layer 10 more sheets of phyllo on top of the semolina, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
10.Cut the baklava into small pieces, and pour the sugar syrup over the top of the baklava.
11.Bake the baklava for 30-40 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
12.Allow the baklava to cool for at least 1 hour before serving.
