Ingredients

4 cups of thinly sliced onions
3 tablespoons salt
2 cans canned tuna , drained
2 tablespoons of melted butter
1/4 cup lemon juice or 1/4 cup lime juice
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1 tablespoon slightly crushed oregano leaves
1 big pinch saffron ( optional )
3/4 cup water
cooked white rice
Mezroota is a traditional Tunisian dish that is typically made with fresh tuna, but canned tuna can also be used in this recipe. Instructions

1.In a bowl, mix together the sliced onions and salt. Set aside for 30 minutes.
2.Rinse the salted onions thoroughly and squeeze out any excess liquid.
3.In a large skillet, heat the melted butter and add the rinsed onions. Saute until golden brown and caramelized.
4.Add the canned tuna, lemon juice, ground cumin, cayenne pepper, slightly crushed oregano leaves, and saffron (if using) to the skillet. Mix well.
5.Add the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
6.Serve hot with cooked white rice.
