Ingredients

2 lbs ground beef or 2 lbs ground lamb
3 medium onions , grated processed to mush
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
5 strands saffron
6 ounces yellow split peas , cooked and mashed
1 raw egg
1 package onion soup mix ( use all envelopes )
3 hardboiled egg ( shelled )
6 soft dried prunes
4 ounces almonds , slivered blanched

Instructions

1.In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, grated onions, salt, pepper, lemon juice, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, saffron, cooked split peas and a raw egg. Mix well.
2.In another bowl, mix all the onion soup envelopes with 2 cups of hot water.
3.Slice the hard boiled eggs and stuffed dried prunes each with almond slivers and set aside.
4.Make 2 inch round meatballs from the beef mixture.
5.Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
6.In a deep baking dish, place the stuffed prunes at the bottom, layer with the meatballs.
7.Pour over the onion soup mixture.
8.Place sliced boiled eggs on top of the meatballs, and cover the dish with aluminium foil, poke few holes on the foil surface.
9.Bake for 1 hour.
10.When baked, take out of the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before removing the aluminium foil lid.
11.Serve hot with steamed white rice.
