Ingredients

1 whole chicken , cut up
2 large onions , chopped fine ( yellow or sweet )
1/4 cup ketjap manis ( Indonesian soy sauce )
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 beef bouillon cube
1 pinch clove ( or 1 whole clove )
1 pinch tamarind pulp ( about 1/2 inch )
2 -3 dashes tomato ketchup
1 teaspoon sambal oelek ( chili paste ) ( optional )
2 cups jasmine rice
Smoor is a classic Indonesian dish that features chicken cooked in a spicy, savory sauce and served over a bed of jasmine rice. Instructions

1.Rinse the jasmine rice in water then place it in a saucepan. Add 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 20 minutes. Once cooked, set aside.
2.In a large pot, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 7-10 minutes, or until browned on all sides.
3.Remove the chicken from the pot and place it on a plate.
4.In the same pot, add the chopped onions, ketjap manis, pepper, nutmeg, beef bouillon, and clove. Stir to combine.
5.Add the chicken back to the pot and stir to coat evenly with the sauce.
6.Add the tamarind pulp, tomato ketchup, and sambal oelek (if using) to the pot and stir to combine.
7.Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the chicken is tender.
8.Serve the chicken and sauce over the rice.
