Ingredients

1 cup 1 % low-fat milk
2 slices white bread , 3/4 inch thick
1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1 onion , chopped
2 garlic cloves , minced
1 tablespoon mild to medium heat curry powder
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1/4 cup seedless raisin
1 apple , peeled and diced
salt and pepper , to taste
2/3 cup water
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 egg , beaten
1 1/2 cups 1 % low-fat milk ( use the milk from the bread soaking )
3 eggs
1 pinch salt
ground nutmeg
4 bay leaves
2 cups parboiled white rice
salt
1/8 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 cup toasted slivered almonds
sliced banana
finely chopped tomatoes , and
finely chopped onion , mixed together
peaches or mango chutney
sliced canned beets
grated coconut
lime pickle ( Patak 's )
Bobotie is a popular South African dish that evolved from the spicy meat dishes introduced to the region by Dutch settlers. It's a classic Cape Malay casserole made from spiced ground beef, raisins and topped with a savory egg custard. Bobotie is traditionally served with yellow rice and a variety of side dishes such as sliced bananas, chopped onions and tomatoes, chutney, fresh coconut and lime pickle. This flavorful casserole dates back to the 17th century and is still popular across South Africa today. Each chef puts their own unique twist on the recipe, but it will always capture the essence of Cape Malay cuisine.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.Tear bread into small pieces and place in a bowl. Pour 1 cup of milk over bread and let soak.
3.In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onions and garlic until meat is no longer pink. Drain.
4.Add curry powder, turmeric, sugar, vinegar, raisins, apple, salt, pepper, water and brown gravy mix. Mix well.
5.Add bread and milk mixture and mix in beaten egg.
6.Pour mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
7.Bake for 30-35 minutes or until set.
8.In a separate bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups of milk, 3 eggs, salt and nutmeg.
9.Pour milk mixture over meat mixture and add bay leaves.
10.Bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until custard topping is set and golden brown.
11.Serve Bobotie hot with rice and garnish with toasted slivered almonds, sliced banana, finely chopped tomatoes and onion mixed together.
