Cooking is a fantastic way to develop children’s skills in a fun and engaging way. Not only does it help children to learn about where food comes from and how it is prepared, but it also helps to develop their fine motor skills, language and communication skills, and teamwork.
With winter well and truly upon us, now is the perfect time to get cooking with your EYFS children. Here are some fun and educational winter cooking ideas to try:
1. Winter Wonderland Biscuits – Mix up some biscuit dough and let the children use cookie cutters to make winter-themed shapes such as snowflakes, stars and mittens. Once baked, they can have fun decorating them with icing and edible glitter.
2. Apple and Cinnamon Porridge – This is a warming and comforting breakfast perfect for chilly winter mornings. The children can help to measure out the ingredients and stir them together in a pot as they cook.
3. Warm Winter Soup – Get the children involved in peeling and chopping vegetables and adding them to a big pot of soup. They will love seeing how everything cooks down and blends together to make a delicious and warming soup.
4. Fruit Kebabs – This is a great activity to help children learn about different fruits and colours. Cut up a variety of fruits into cubes and let them thread them onto skewers. They can then enjoy eating their colourful creations!
5. Hot Chocolate Spoons – This is a fun and indulgent treat for the children to make. Melt some chocolate and let them spoon it into silicone spoon molds. Once set, they can stir them into a mug of hot milk to make their own delicious hot chocolate.
Cooking with EYFS children is all about having fun and learning through play. So, get creative in the kitchen this winter and watch your little ones’ faces light up as they discover new flavours and textures!
