Winter can be a difficult time to keep young children entertained, but cooking is a great way to engage their senses and teach them new skills. Here are some winter cooking ideas for EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) that are sure to be a hit!
1. Hot Chocolate Cones
Fill a small plastic zipper bag with hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows. Tie a ribbon around the top and place it inside a clear cellophane cone. To make a cup of hot chocolate, simply empty the contents of the bag into a mug and add hot milk.
2. Snowman Snacks
Cut circles from mozzarella cheese and stack them on top of each other to make a snowman. Use a carrot for the nose, olive slices for the eyes and buttons, and a slice of red pepper for the mouth. Serve with crackers.
3. Winter Soup
Let the children help prepare a batch of winter soup by chopping up vegetables like carrots, parsnips, and potatoes. Simmer everything in a pot with some chicken or vegetable broth until the vegetables are soft. Blend it all together and serve with crusty bread.
4. Gingerbread Men
Making gingerbread men is a classic winter activity that children love. Let them help measure out the ingredients and mix up the dough. Use cookie cutters to make the gingerbread men shapes and let the children decorate them with icing and candies.
5. Snowflake Pancakes
Make a batch of pancake batter and pour it into a squeeze bottle with a small opening. Use the bottle to draw snowflake shapes on a hot griddle and fill in the shapes with more batter. Flip the pancake when it’s ready and serve with syrup and butter.
Whether it’s making snowman snacks or whipping up a batch of hot chocolate cones, there are plenty of fun and easy winter cooking ideas that EYFS children can enjoy. Give these ideas a try and see how much fun cooking can be!
