Ingredients

300 g all-purpose flour ( medium gluten )
56 g sugar
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
150 g water
11 g active dry yeast
300 g ground pork
300 g Chinese cabbage ( Bok Choy was shown in the photos )
4 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon sesame oil ( I always use dark sesame oil )
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon rice wine
1 pinch pepper
minced green onion ( optional )
minced gingerroot ( optional )
minced garlic ( optional )
Bao-Zi (Tsai Ru Bao), or steamed buns, originated in China but are now enjoyed worldwide as a popular snack or main meal. These buns are made from a fluffy dough that is steamed and filled with savory ingredients, such as pork, vegetables, or even sweet bean paste. Bao-Zi (Tsai Ru Bao) makes for a great lunch or dinner, as it's savory and filling, but also lighter and healthier than many fried foods. Plus, it's easy to experiment with different fillings to keep things interesting and delicious.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cooking oil, and baking powder.
2.Add water and active dry yeast, and stir until dough is formed. Knead for 5-10 minutes until it forms a smooth ball.
3.Put the dough in a clean, oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rest for an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
4.In a separate bowl, mix ground pork, Chinese cabbage, water, sesame oil, soy sauce, salt, sugar, rice wine, pepper, and optional ginger, garlic, and green onion until well-combined.
5.On a floured surface, roll dough out into a long cylinder, then divide it into 16-20 small pieces.
6.Flatten each small piece of dough into a small circle, then use a rolling pin to create a thin outer edge and a thicker center.
7.Add pork mixture in the center, then gather the edges of the dough together and twist to seal.
8.Place each bun on a small square of parchment paper and let rest for another 10-15 minutes.
9.Place the buns in a steamer basket on top of boiling water and steam for 20 minutes.
10.Serve hot and enjoy!

PROS

Bao-Zi (Tsai Ru Bao) is a flavorful dish that is both filling and satisfying.
The steam cooking method means it’s a healthier option than fried foods and it’s easy to customize the fillings to suit personal tastes.

CONS

This dish can be quite time-consuming to prepare, and not all ingredients may be readily available in certain regions.
It can also be quite easy to over-stuff the buns if not careful, which can lead to the filling leaking out while steaming.
