Ingredients

1 cup toor dal
1/2 cup red lentil ( masoor )
3 cups water
1 medium tomatoes , chopped
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon canola oil
1/4 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon cumin seed
1 serrano pepper , slit
2 dried red chilies , broken into half
3 -4 curry leaves
2 garlic cloves , finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon cumin powder
1/4 cup cilantro , chopped
salt , to taste
Garlic dal, also known as dal tadka or dal fry, is a popular Indian dish that is typically made with lentils, spices, and aromatics like garlic and onion. It is a staple dish in many Indian households and is often served with rice or naan bread. This particular recipe puts a twist on the classic dal recipe by adding garlic to the mix. Instructions

1.Rinse the toor dal and red lentil and add them to a large pot along with the water, chopped tomatoes, salt, and turmeric powder.
2.Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes until the lentils are tender.
3.In a separate pan, heat the canola oil over medium heat and add the black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, serrano pepper, dried red chilies, curry leaves, and finely chopped garlic. Fry the spices for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and the mustard seeds start to pop.
4.Add the cumin powder to the spice mixture, then pour the entire spice mixture into the lentil soup. Stir well to combine.
5.Let the soup simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
6.Stir in the chopped cilantro and adjust the seasoning to taste with additional salt if needed.
